Nine days in Romania: our itinerary
Romania is more than Transylvania, but that was pretty much what we had time for with only nine days to spend in the country. We did see some very beautiful old towns, take some long walks in nature, eat delicious food almost every day and moved around by train easily. →
Being a vegetarian in Sri Lanka
The food in Sri Lanka was not much like that of South India. A lot less spicy, but still very tasty and with interesting new flavors. There are restaurants in the larger towns, but the locals don’t seem to eat out much. Try some home cooking at your homestay! →
Is Colombo worth your time?
A temple with a huge collection of Buddha statues, a hectic shopping district and a slightly more luxurious hotel stay awaited us on the very last stop of the Sri Lanka trip. I enjoyed Colombo, but I could certainly understand those who don’t. →
A day and a night in colonial Galle
We made a short stop in Galle on the way back toward Colombo, strolled around the old streets and stayed at a guest house inside the citadel. Go for the excellent food and pretty look of things, but leave again for the real Sri Lanka. →
Away from it all on the beaches of Tangalle
Possibly the best homestay on the island, some seriously relaxed time on the beach and long walks around town was exactly what we wanted on the coast. Throw in some monkeys and the best food we had on the island, and you can’t go wrong. →
Close encounter with elephants at Udawalawe National Park
We spent the night in Udawalawe to be ready for an early morning safari. We got to see elephants up close and so many other animals! While we were in Udawalawe, we also visited an elephant orphanage, where orphaned baby elephants are raised to be released. →
What to do on a day out in Ella
We spent a few days in Ella, and here are some suggestions for activities to keep you busy for at least a full day. If you get tired from a hike up one of the hills, just relax with a meal on a terrace overlooking the tea plantations. →
The scenic but busy train ride from Kandy to Ella
With all the seats being sold out weeks in advance, we bought unreserved second class tickets on the station in Kandy just before boarding the train for Ella. And we were lucky enough to actually get to sit down for a few hours! →
Dambulla and Sigiriya on your own
Instead of taking a daytrip from Kandy, we opted for public bus and a night at a nice homestay in Sigiriya, for a slower and cheaper experience. Both the Dambulla caves and Sigiriya Rock were really impressive! →
